I’m pretty sure you will have heard of the term film-noir, even though you might not have consciously gone out to read a book or see a film associated with it. The term was devised by the French critic Nino Frank in 1946 to describe the stylishly shot crime films coming out of Hollywood at the time. They had a cynical tone and characters’ actions often were spurred on by sexual attraction, whether manufactured or true.

One of the creative minds most associated with the genre was the American writer Raymond Chandler (1888-1959), who created hard-boiled detective novels with the private investigator Philip Marlowe as the main character. Following the successful film adaptation of his novel ‘Murder My Sweet’ he branched out into writing screenplays. He earned two Oscar nominations for his work, such as on ‘Double Indemnity’ which was based on another hard-boiled writer James M. Cain. Basically Chandler had the right credentials and since his death many crime writers have cited his influence, these include Ian Rankin, Jeffery Deaver, and Val McDermid.

What I’m going to have a brief look at is ‘The Big Sleep’, which was the title of the original novel and the famous 1946 film adaptation. The latter was directed by Howard Hawks who could seemingly slip form one genre to another without breaking sweat. He created many classics, whether it was a gangster film, screwball comedy, western, musical or drama. It also saw Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall team up once again after the success of their first film together, ‘To Have and Have Not’ (1944), which was also a Hawks directed movie.

The film by and large followed the novel’s original storyline, although due to the censorship rules of the time some elements were cut or toned down. Don’t worry I’m not going to spoil the film by telling you what this involved, but I’ll give you the opening case that Philip Marlowe is handed. Marlowe (Bogart) drops in to see one General Sternwood who wants him to clear up the gambling debts that the general’s eldest daughter, Mrs Vivian Rutledge (Bacall) has been accumulating. Marlowe meets Vivian after emerging from his meeting with Sternwood and it’s apparent that the general has a formidable eldest daughter albeit with flaws, these are minimised as we get to know more about the youngest daughter Carmen (Martha Vickers). She’s sexy but troubled and will cause Marlowe no end of problems. Other memorable characters intrude and sub-plots bubble up.

The transfer from book to film is always a difficult one to make, but in the case of ’The Big Sleep’, proved to be not such a challenge.

The plot for ’The Big Sleep’is famous for being rather confusing, but the lighting, performances and dialogue are so good that this is a minor complaint. The film is highly likely to keep your interest, unless you have a phobia for black and white films. If this is the case I offer my sincere commiserations.

If you have not been fortunate enough to see The Help yet, I would strongly advise that you put it down on your wish list, or you rent it out soon. It is a well written, acted and produced film, that tells a story of racial inequality, women’s circles and class wars, in a very moving and humorous manor. It is set in 1950’s in Jackson, America, and follows the lives of a group of suburban house wives and their ‘Help’, which is the name given to the black maids at the time.

The story is an absolute gem, and leaves you feeling happy inside, after a long emotional journey which highlights the problems faced at that point in time with different class and race issues. Emma Stone plays an excellent role as a young writer who goes against the grain in her small group of stuck up, ignorant friends. She decides that she wants to write a book to tell the stories of the maids, which at the time had no voice in society at all. It follows the daily struggle of their lives, and the quiet dignity that they had to conduct themselves with.

One of the hardest things for me to deal with when watching this film was the racist behavior which the young white wives showed to their black maids. It is difficult to understand how this type of treatment was allowed to happen, and listening to some of the horrifying things they would say was sometimes difficult to take. I always find it interesting to see how people operated and thought in past times, and find it amazing to think that people actually thought it was OK to go around acting and thinking as they did. The film is well balanced and has great characters in it, in particular the two main maids in the story. There are no real male characters in the story, as presumably they are always out at work selling office furniture, but the story is not about them, it is about the women of the time.

I have often wondered what set Japanese cars apart from the others. In fact, such has been their meteoric rise that they overshadowed all other cars from other nations. There was a point in time when Japanese cars far outsold American cars all over the world. And close behind, within nipping distance came the Korean, Swedish and German car makers.

What set them apart was the fact that the Japanese invested heavily into making cars that were extremely reliable and were fuel efficient besides being cheaper. One never had to head to the garage for repairs considering the cutting edge technology these cars came with. The recent spate of incidents where some Japanese cars had to be recalled in bulk for fixing a problem was more the exception than the norm. In a world of fast depleting oil, along with the soaring prices for what were available, turned people towards these cars that were extremely fuel-efficient. Particularly with the recessions and job cuts, it became imperative for people to put a leash on their fuel bills. This, they did with a vengeance. Sales boomed and Japanese car makers laughed all the way to the bank.

I have often wondered at the naivety of large car companies. All they need to do is ask a man on the road what he wants. Then give him what he wants. Instead, they hire companies to do a far flung survey which is done heaven-knows-how and the net root result is an urgent requirement for a car that looks attractive but would never entice me to put my hard earned money on.

The catch is in finding out what the requirement is and giving the consumer just that without the crap. Nobody buys that. The Japanese seem to have got that down to a fine art.

Purchasing something? It’s interesting how much things have been changed within the past few years. It previously was that when you were looking to purchase a new watch you would have to head down to the local jewelry store (who you were on a first name basis with), tried on the whole selection, and chose the best one. If you are looking for some running accessories, you would probably want to pick each up and hold in your hand. Then along came the malls, strip malls, and the Wal-Marts. Niche shops started disappearing as did the personal touch and the quality. Nowadays, we do the majority of our shopping on the internet.

It is a surprise, Grandmother and Mom both know how to add things to their shopping carts on Amazon and know how to enter their billing information. Even if you don’t purchase the service or product online, most of the research we do is conducted on the internet. There are many website which offer a review and a rating for the products or services which can be found on the internet. Should you be like the majority of consumers, the process would go something like this:

1.) Scour the review sites and then depending on those reviews search out niche sites that include the opinions of consumers
2.) Decide on a few different options
3.) Perform a search on price, look for coupons and purchase it

It can be easy for time to quickly go by and still be left with a few choices while still wonder which is the best choice.

One great thing about this period of the history of shopping for products and services is there are many chances for a company to truly stand out. Take a look at all the low cost garbage that is available today. We live in a culture that is quick to throw-away and believes that shiny and new is better to have. That it is okay to purchase a new umbrella each year because the cheap one you bought broke the first time you used it. There are a few companies which have risen above this and make quality goods, then stand beside them with amazing customer service and return policies that the “Made in Taiwan” attitude can’t compete with. A great example of this is Zappos.com.

These people sell footwear on the web, provide exceptional items, have awesome customer support and if you don’t fancy shoes UPS just delivered shipping is free each way.

The good thing is quality retailers such as they are available and to find all of them, you simply need to search a great deal harder. Winston Churchill stated “responsibility will be the actual value associated with greatness.” All of us challenge organizations to no longer look at just profits, evaluate their current methods and think about responsibility.

Eckhart Tolle, born Ulrich Tolle in Germany, has been hailed as one of the most spiritually influential people in the United States. Best-selling writer Eckhart was personally interviewed by Oprah on her show while going through chapters of A New Earth Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose. It became the fastest-selling title of Oprah’s Book Club.

The book is actually an extension of the detailed analysis of thoughts presented in Eckhart’s first book ‘The Power of Now’. The book is written in a long essay form, brooding upon serious spiritual topics in a light-hearted and pragmatic manner.

Tolle proposes nothing new but a more realistic explanation of the same spiritual principles of ancient religions and philosophies. For example, he presents an idea that all pain and suffering is caused due to identification of the pain with the self. As soon as we realize that we can stand back and just ‘be'without attaching ourselves to a situation, all the pain and suffering vanishes. The situations are not what cause us the pain but our thoughts about them. It is not as simple as the pain you feel when it support companies can’t solve you companies problem, it is deeper tan that.

The book draws from a lot of widely different sources- The Holy Bible, Hinduism, Buddhism, Zen, and German spiritualism. In fact, the first chapter starts with an allegorical evocation, which he describes using a Biblical prophecy about the ending of the old world and the new flowering of a new world order.

Thatsauto.com, as the name suggests, caters for information on automobiles. One gets tips on buying and selling cars, including information on the sale or purchase of the best family car, on the site and the site generally gives the impression that it is a new site and has yet a lot of improvements that it could benefit from. The welcome page of the site is designed with a number of large size banners and pictures. There would be better usage of the space in case the designer considered using thumbnails. There is also need for the web page owner to consider using standard size images as the first page always creates the first and lasting impression upon its viewers.

The header of the site has been broken up into pieces, which also is also not a good design and the empty space that the homepage has, also calls for some note. There are also a number of links on the homepage that do not work and lead to nowhere.

There are links on the homepage that leads one to the blog which is running on Word press and is a better managed affair. However, the header banner in the blog also has the same inconsistency as the web page. The pages that one is taken to on clicking on the working links in the main web page have a different look and feel. Though it may have been easy for the designer to create the site it gives a feel of discomfort to the visitor of the site.

Having obtained a very superior domain name, the owner of the site should consider using a CMS like word press across the entire site and concentrate more on the content of the site. With the interest that cars and its associated works hold over the people at large, the site would get a lot of visitors if these aspects are taken care of.

The 10 hour timer permits the most versatility and can allow for all day long baking. Search for a timer that will allow you to enter multiple baking times plus temps, and one which will switch to warming mode as soon as the establish cooking time is completed.

Think about buying a slow cooker which has a stay cool exterior designed for additional safety, particularly if you have children in the home. They ought to also have a small, pull-away power cord for the same basic safety concerns.

Within this day and age it is certainly be hard to ensure you are receiving all the vitamins, minerals plus 5 a day servings of fruit and veggies that your body requires to keep it healthful as well as feeling fit.
A brand name means a lot to some people. I will always pay the extra expense for the product or service I am familiar with and also trust. I prefer Apple products to their imitation products of their rival companies. Any camera Canon produce will always grab my interest over the ones that other camera manufactures make. Heinz baked beans will always be brought instead of the supermarkets own brand. But when it comes to fashion and grooming products I’m always at a bit of a loss.

Clothes I’m happy to by on the cheap from whatever high street retailer sells their own imitation brand. I find shopping for clothes rather stressful and so if I can get everything I need in one shop for very cheap it suits me fine that it doesn’t have a brand name on it.

My girlfriend spends a large some of money on clothes and beauty products, which is great for me, as she looks stunning most of the time. It also works out good for me as I can get her advice on products I should buy to keep myself looking reasonably tidy. I wouldn’t be able to tell whether a supermarkets own shampoo is better that Pantene but when you have someone in your life that has tried and tested all these things they can really point you in the right direction. Maybe I’m being a bit de-masculated but at least now I look and feel great when I either go to work or just out for a meal. So it is worth the extra expense when it comes to these sorts of things.

Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson has taken a short time to turn into a worldwide sensation. The first volume of his Millennium trilogy was only sold in Sweden when it was published in 2005. Then came the English version of the third volume of the trilogy by the title “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” and all hell broke loose. The book has received the same amount of security as had the publishing of Harry Potter series. The author had very interestingly ended the second volume on a note of suspense where the heroine by name Lisbeth Salander was suspended between life and death. The curiosity of the readers was naturally waiting to be whetted.

The heroine had been declared a mentally incompetent person and dispatched to a cruel institution when she was a child. This is the threat which she faces in the final volume written by Larsson before his sudden death in 2004. There is drama and suspense too in the story where Lisbeth is charged with murder of her father, while she has in her favour the help from a hospital doctor and an editor of the Millennium Magazine. How does the editor set up a communication with Lisbeth crossing the barriers placed by the security is another nerve gripping description that the author takes the readers through.

Larsson displays his concerns about the Swedish democracy and the prevailing scenario of hatred towards women in his writing. The final volume solves the mystery and intrigue that he had set up in his first two books. Making the grown up Lisbeth into a highly abused person coming across well known characters makes for the first number of pages in the final volume and then the story once again takes on the road of drama, suspense and intrigue.

Larsson proves himself to have great talent in writing crime fiction, his work is like explosive diesel.
